Job Role Shift Leader

Hours of work: Monday – Friday 6am- 2pm/ 2pm-10pm /10pm-6am Rotational

The role of Automation Shift Leader is responsible for a small team to run automated machine cells.

Will be responsible for machine and robot recovery to minimise downtime. All training and maintenance of machines and robots for multiple cells.

Needs to be competent and confident with ensuring TPM regimes are defined and adhered to. This will cover the machine, the robot, tooling and work holding.

The role requires target driven working to internal schedules. This will require discipline for managing the team’s holidays, breaks and also covering absences.

>Liaise with Production Manager and HR to escalate any issues/concerns in accordance to the relevant policy

  • Assist with any relevant formal investigations as and when required
  • Assist with any formal disciplinarians as and when required
  • Ensure an understanding of The ACAS Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures

>Carry out back to work meetings

>Facilitate with the Production Manager communications of

  • Any holiday Requests
  • Any grievances

>Communicating any changes to working conditions


> Up hold and supervisor production schedules by ensuring

  • There are sufficient manning levels to meet the requirements of the production plan
  • Liaise with management over the requirements of staff
  • Ensure that Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) are input, monitored and targets achieved
  • Machines are set according to production plan by tie in with setters/engineers.
  • The flow of parts for delivery is maintained by tie in with the material handlers
  • Communication with logistics is maintained to ensure parts are ready for delivery on time

Ensure parts are ready for dispatch

Ensure RAW material is available using the route card system

Ensure the route card system is adhered to and that 1st off’s are completed and all relevant signatures are in place at each stage.


  • All machines are producing fully conforming parts and all processes are being adhered to (check at the start and middle of each shift)
  • All product and machine related problems are taken charge of
  • Machines are recovered from error and basic tool changes are performed to enable continuity of production

>Ensure all production and quality procedures are carried out and documentation is completed

  • Visual checks of components every 2hrs
  • Control all non-conforming parts
  • Follow correct procedures including documentation for scrap


>Ensure all machines have had a CMM check carried out within a 24hour period, where applicable.

>Ensure that CMM reports are actioned and saved

  • All out of tolerance features found must be actioned using engineering and QC support
  • Comments must be recorded against out of tolerance features found so as to evidence the action that has been taken

>Distribute and monitor all first aid and welfare consumables

  • Ensuring that items are not being used un necessarily



>Monitor and maintain all lean initiatives including

  • All aspects of 5S principles

>Take an active role in the team goals and key performance targets to ensure continuous improvement

>Activity take part in training for

  • Lean methodologies
  • Lean tools used for continuous improvement and elimination of waste



>Ensure good communication of production information to the production team and take an active role in meetings and problem-solving activities.
